eBook: eGaming & Bibliotheken

Nach den letzten eBook Titeln (Web 2.0 für KMU, PR 2.0, Bibliotheksmarketing) habe ich meine Serie fortgesetzt: es geht um elektronische Spiele und deren Einsatz in Bibliotheken.

In diesem eBook ging es mir vor allem darum aufzuzeigen, welches Potential eGaming im Bereich “Bibliothek” hätte und wie ein Einsatz in diesen öffentlichen Institutionen ausschauen könnte. Das Thema ist ja ein brand-aktuelles, auch wenn dessen Adaption im deutsch-sprachigen Raum nicht gerade schnell von statten geht.

Das eBook ist sowohl für den Einsteiger, aber vor allem für den Praktiker und Entscheider gedacht. Es ist rund 70 Seiten stark, 18MB schwer und kostenlos zu downloaden. Viel Spaß damit!

Das von meinen Kollegen Thomas Primus und Xaver Götzl und mir (Alex Pfeiffer) geschriebene Buch

ist nun nach knapp 3 Jahren Recherche und Schreibarbeit erhältlich.

Eludamos: Ankündigung der 2. Ausgabe + cfp

Dear colleagues and friends of the game research community,

We are happy to announce that the second edition of "Eludamos. Journal for Computer Game Culture." is now online.

This issue marks the launch of two new sections in Eludamos. The first new section, POSITIONS, offers critical views on key gaming issues. By asking bold questions and turning a light on misconceptions, we want to foster discussion and help to keep the field fresh and lively.

The second new section, PERSPECTIVES, is designed to take an in-depth look at some of the key subjects in the study of digital games.

grand theft childhood?

Die Ergebnisse einer der größten bisher durchgeführten Studien zum Thema Gewalt und Computerspiele wird demnächst in Buchform nachlesbar sein. Anders als bei den meisten quantitativen Erhebungen wurden im Rahmen des 1.5 Millionen Dollar-Projektes von Lawrence Kutner und Cheryl Olson vom Harvard Medical School Center for Mental Health and Media insgesamt 1200 Kinder und Jugendliche befragt. Auch die Ergebnisse sind laut einem lesenswerten Interview auf Game Couch wirklichkeitsnäher (und umfassender) als in den meisten anderen Studien. Bin schon gespannt wie das Buch aufgenommen wird.

Warum gerade dieses Buch erwähnenswert ist? Weil die Autoren schon in obigem Interview mit einigen althergebrachten Meinungen über den Zusammenhang zwischen Spielen und Gewalt aufräumen.

Wieder mal durfte ich den MIT C3 Newsletter befüllen und da sich der Artikel mit dem Zusammenhang zwischen Medienkonvergenz und dem Story Potential von Computerspielen auseinandersetzt, soll er auch hier ein zu Hause finden.

Story-Pleasure Through Complementary Media Use in Lord of the Rings online

A new door has opened to the famous narrative universe created by J.R.R. Tolkien. With the MMPORG Lord of the Rings online (LoR) it has become possible to dig oneself even deeper into the world of Frodo Baggins and his fellows and to add an interactive experience to the pleasures of reading the books and watching the films.

Admittedly, I was skeptical at first. Yes, I liked the books well enough and I had watched the films several times, twice all three of them in a row (extended version!). But still, I could not imagine how a story as complex and dense as Tolkien's Lord of the Rings could be satisfyingly conveyed into a game. After all, games are still a little "narratively inconvenienced". The attempts at storytelling made so far mostly by single player games often suffered from poor hypothesis building opportunities for the players. What would happen next? You only knew when you had tried and failed once. "Learning by dying," as Gunter Hager, game designer at Games that Matter likes to call it. But when surprise always gets the better of suspense, the narrative experience lacks an essential quality.

Announcement

Dear colleagues and friends of the game research community,

we are happy to introduce "Eludamos. Journal for Computer Game Culture."

This new scientific, international, peer reviewed online journal deals with everything ludic and looks at digital games from a multitude of perspectives. Its approach is deliberately broad to accomodate the rapid changes and constant growth of this highly transdisciplinary field.

The journal is organized in sections with the first issue containing an in-depth introduction, articles and game reviews. You can already enjoy this kick-off publication at http://www.eludamos.org.

More sections are possible in later issues and we are looking forward to your suggestions. We also invite you to submit ideas for special issues.

Our goal is a biannual appearance and the next publication is intended for February 2008. Please see official call for papers below.

Call for Papers

The call for papers for the new, international, peer-reviewed online journal "Eludamos. Journal for Computer Game Culture" is now open. Submissions are expected to be in english and to include full papers plus abstracts. Please note that we can only consider papers which have not been previously published and which are not under consideration for another journal (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor). For further specificiation of submission guidelines please consult the Eludamos website.

The next issue is due to appear in February 2008. Submissions can be made throughout the year, however, articles for the February edition must be submitted until Dec. 15th 2007. Submissions that reach us after that date will be considered for the summer issue.

Magische Stunden im Cyberspace

Vielleicht erlebt sie eine Renaissence, meine Zeit als Ö1 "Netzukultur" Kolumnistin? Ich habs jedenfalls vermisst, das Spiel mit dem Text und diese andere Art des Nachdenkens über games. Hier ein paar Gedanken über magische Stunden im Cyberspace.

Think Smooth – Challenges, Pleasures and Pitfalls of WarioWare: Smooth Moves

I stand in the middle of a cheering crowd at my work place (isn’t it great to be a game scholar?), holding my wii controller in the graceful stance of the sketch artist, and when I finally realize what I should have been doing, my chance to throw that “pen” at the dartboard has already passed. There goes another turtle, oh no!

The Nintendo wii game WarioWare: Smooth Moves belies its title in that it is rather a cognitive than a kinesthetic challenge. Of course, from the perspective of the viewer, seeing your esteemed colleagues clumsily wagging an elephant’s trunk in order to collect virtual apples has a certain appeal. But as a player, the main challenge lies in figuring out what action is required in a very limited amount of time. The following is an analysis of the sense-making challenges, pleasures and pitfalls that occur in the course of the “Evil Attacks Diamond Dojo” episode.
